Northern Views: California Painting in the Plein Air Tradition

Northern Views: California Painting in the Plein Air Tradition
April 9-June 19, 2005

Northern Views is the Napa Valley Museum's second plein air exhibition, a juried exhibition of artworks reflecting a modern interpretation of Northern California's landscape and environment by contemporary artists from throughout California. The Museum received nearly 250 submissions, and jurors Jean Stern, Director, Irvine Museum; and Kenn Backhaus and Kevin Mc Pherson, past presidents of the Plein Air Painters of America selected some 65 paintings to be featured.

Some of the top plein air painters in California will be represented working in a variety of media, including oil, pastel and watercolor. Artists include Junn Roca, Ray Roberts, Charles Muench, Michael Obermeyer, Keith Wicks, Brian Blood, Camille Przewodek, Zanaida Mott, Douglas Morgan, Carolyn Hess-Low, Barry John Raybould, Debra Huse, Armand Cabrera, Christin Coy and Carole Gray-Weihman. Northern Views is guest curated by Andrea Husby, PhD.

In the strictest sense, the term plein air refers to paintings that are completed entirely on-site outdoors. However, in the context of the artistic origins of the term plein air, the governing sense is the effect and style that the painting creates. Therefore, entries to the exhibition were either done completely outdoors or they may have started in the outdoors and been finished in the studio.

3-Day Paint Out in Lake Tahoe

Seasons of Martis Paint Out and Celebration...

North Tahoe Arts in partnership with East West Partners through the
Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation, Truckee Gallery, and the Truckee
Donner Land Trust plans a month-long celebration of the wonders of
Martis Valley at Lake Tahoe in October, 2007.

As part of this celebration we are planning a three-day "paint out" at various locations throughout the Martis Valley the weekend of October 5, 2007, culminating in a sale and cash awards ceremony at The Village at Northstar at Tahoe on Sunday, October 7, 2007. East West Partners, the developers of the
new Ritz-Carlton Highlands Lake Tahoe and The Village at Northstar hope to make this an annual event drawing regional and nationally known artists and collectors. As you may know, early October is a glorious time in the mountains when nature is at its best. The painting opportunities should be wonderful. After the Ritz-Carlton, now under construction, is completed, it is anticipated that it will be the venue for this annual event.

Low-cost housing at Northstar or home stays with local Tahoe artists will be available on a first-come first-served basis. There will be no entry fees for participating in this event. Please let us know, by sending an email to andy@askaff.com, if you have an interest in participating or if you have any questions. We hope that you will consider being a part of this event.

New Movie "Local Color"

George Gallo, writer, director and fellow painter invites you to attend a free screening of his new film, LOCAL COLOR. To get free tickets, pick them up at Scottsdale Artists' School or visit the website at: www.localcolorthemovie.com

Click on ATTEND A FREE SCREENING on the top of the page.

Local Color

LOCAL COLOR is about a successful artist who looks back with loving memories on the summer of his defining year, 1974. A talented, but troubled eighteen-year old art student befriends an elderly alcoholic genius painter who has turned his back on not only art, but life. The two form what appears to be at first a tenuous relationship. The kid wants to learn all the secrets the master has locked away inside his head and heart. Time has not been kind to the old master. His life appears pointless to him until the kid rekindles his interest in his work and ultimately gives him the will to live. Together, they give one another a priceless gift. The kid learns to see the world through the master's eyes. And the master learns to see life through the eyes of innocence again. LOCAL COLOR is based on director George Gallo's real life experience.

World-renowned painter, Richard Schmid says, "Without a doubt, the strength of the insights in the film are due to the fact that George Gallo, besides writing and directing LOCAL COLOR, is an accomplished painter in his own right."

Theater owner Dan Harkins personally selected the film to open at Harkins Camelview in Scottsdale.

Additionally, George will be in attendance at the screening to host a special post Q&A with the audience.

Our goal is to get this film out to those who will appreciate the film's stunning artistic images and George's message about mentorship in the artistic community.

Currently the following dates (see below) are available to attend a free screening, all screenings will take place at Harkins Camelview 5 (located across from Scottsdale Fashion Square) and would love to have you join us.

SCREENING DATES:
Tuesday, October 16th, 7pm
